The History of Muay Thai

  • Muay Thai, also known as the “Art of Eight Limbs,” is a traditional martial art that originated in Thailand over several centuries ago

  • By the 18th century, Muay Thai had evolved into a regulated sport with public matches often held in temples and royal courts. Fighters wore hemp ropes around their hands (known as kard chuek) instead of modern gloves. Over time, as Thailand modernized, so did Muay Thai—introducing boxing rings, gloves, and official rules during the 20th century to improve safety and global appeal.

  • Today, Muay Thai is not only Thailand’s national sport but also a world-renowned combat discipline practiced by millions. It has influenced modern kickboxing and is a fundamental part of mixed martial arts (MMA) training.
